Infectious mononucleosis is a viral illness most commonly caused by the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV). It is often called the “kissing disease” because it spreads mainly through saliva.
The Monospot test is a rapid blood test used to help diagnose infectious mononucleosis. It detects heterophile antibodies, which are antibodies produced by the immune system during EBV infection.
